Poem for Aaron

wheat
never burst
from red
soil like
it does there.
before snow crushes
the remnants of
simmering chaff, distant
as memory, near as teeth,
autumn shuts on the blue,
no longer immense, but
the brilliant specific glass
of a solstice gaze.
